Consider the following Quranic verses: "He has let free the two bodies Of flowing water, Meeting together: Between them is a Barrier Which they do not transgress." [Al-Quran 55:19-20]

In the Arabic text the word barzakh means a barrier or a partition. This barrier is not a physical partition. The Arabic word maraja literally means 'they both meet and mix with each other'. Early commentators of the Quran were unable to explain the two opposite meanings for the two bodies of water, i.e. they meet and mix, and at the same time, there is a barrier between them.

Modern Science has discovered that in the places where two different seas meet, there is a barrier between them. This barrier divides the two seas so that each sea has its own temperature, salinity and density. [Principles of Oceanography, Davis, pp. 92-93] Oceanologists are now in a better position to explain this verse. There is a slanted unseen water barrier between the two seas through which water from one sea passes to the other.

But when the water from one sea enters the other sea, it loses its distinctive characteristic and becomes homogenized with the other water. In a way this barrier serves as a transitional homogenizing area for the two waters. This scientific phenomenon mentioned in the Quran was also confirmed by Dr. William Hay who is a well-known marine scientist and Professor of Geological Sciences at the University of Colorado, U.S.A. The Quran mentions this phenomenon also in the following verse: "And made a separating bar between the two bodies Of flowing water?" [Al-Quran 27:61]

This phenomenon occurs in several places, including the divider between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean at Gibralter. But when the Quran speaks about the divider between fresh and salt water, it mentions the existence of "a forbidding partition" with the barrier. "It is He Who has Let free the two bodies Of flowing water: One palatable and sweet, And the other salty and bitter; Yet has He Made a barrier between them, And a partition that is forbidden To be passed." [Al-Quran 25:53]

Modern science has discovered that in estuaries, where fresh (sweet) and salt-water meet, the situation is somewhat different from that found in places where two seas meet. It has been discovered that what distinguishes fresh water from salt water in estuaries is a "pycnocline zone with a marked density discontinuity separating the two layers." [Oceanography, Gross, p. 242. Also see Introductory Oceanography, Thurman, pp. 300-301.] This partition (zone of separation) has salinity different from both the fresh water and the salt water. This phenomenon occurs in several places, including Egypt, where the river Nile flows into the Mediterranean Sea.

A) Quran 18 64 “And when Moses said to his servant, “I will not cease [traveling] until I reach the junction of the two waters or continue for a long period”

B)Quran 25-53-“And it is He who has released [simultaneously] the two bodies of waters, one fresh and sweet and one salty and bitter, and He placed between them a barrier and prohibiting partition

.C)Quran 35 12 “And not alike are the two bodies of water. One is fresh and sweet, palatable for drinking, and one is salty and bitter. And from each you eat tender meat and extract ornaments which you wear, and you see the ships plowing through [them] that you might seek of His bounty; and perhaps you will be grateful”

D) Quran 55-19″He has let loose the 2 bodies of water meetingBetween them is a barrier which none of them can transgress”1-The arabic word used to refer to the 2 bodies of water is “bahrain”.In B and C, Allah SWT informs us that the 2 bodies of water is a river (fresh water) and the sea(salt water).No reference is made made to what “bahrain” is in A and D. However since “bahrain” is explained as being fresh water and salt water in B and C, we conclude that it is also fresh water and salt water in A and D.

3-In B and C the intermediate zone/place between two the bodies of water ie. river(fresh water) and the sea(salt water) is an ESTUARY

4-In D there is a difference of opinion as to what “bahrain” is.Some scholars say that the two bodies of water are fresh and salt water while other scholars suggest that reference is made two 2 salt water bodies meeting. ie.2 oceans meeting or 2 seas meeting.Scholars like Ibn Kathir and Sadi are of the opinion that in D,reference is made to fresh water meeting sea water.We concur with those scholars who understand that reference is made in D to a river meeting the sea.The intermediate zone is thus an ESTUARY.

5-Oceanographers/scientists are of the opinion that the entire ocean is one body of water AND THEREFORE ONE CAN DEDUCE THAT SCIENTISTS CONCUR WITH THE OPINION THAT “”BAHRAIN” REFERS EXCLUSIVELY TO FRESH WATER AND SALT WATER AND NOT 2 DIFFERENT OCEANS/2 SEAS. Oceanographers are of the opinion that the ocean is a single stream of water consisting of different currents each having their own properties.Mixing of of theses currents occur in the ocean.A virtual line defines the various geographical location of the oceans eg the atlantic,indian pacific ocean.etc. Physical barriers or boundaries do not exist in the ocean.

6-Since the ocean is considered a single mass of water by oceanographers the use of “” bahrain “” in the Quran should not be used to refer to 2 oceans or 2 seas.The interpretation of the word “”bahrain “” in the Quran should be used exclusively for the two types of water on the planet ie. salt and fresh water.

Border Between Two Worlds—and a World of Its Own

One of the most interesting features of DHABs is the zone where they meet the normal seawater above them. Because of its high salt content, the brine in a DHAB is so dense that it mixes very little with the seawater above. Instead, there is a narrow layer of water where, as you move toward the basin, the salt concentration goes from normal seawater salinity to hypersaline (very salty). Along that gradient, the density of the water goes from that of normal seawater to very high, and the oxygen concentration drops from normal seawater concentrations to zero. That transition zone is called the halocline. At some basins it is only a meter (39 inches) thick.

Modern science has discovered that in estuaries, where fresh (sweet) and salt water meet, the situation is somewhat different from what is found in places where two seas meet.  It has been discovered that what distinguishes fresh water from salt water in estuaries is a “pycnocline zone with a marked density discontinuity separating the two layers.”3  This partition (zone of separation) has a different salinity from the fresh water and from the salt water4 (see figure 14).

A Massive Freshwater Sea Is Buried Beneath the Atlantic Ocean

In the above verse, we see that starting from the sura and verse numbers, some of the words in the verse and the clues given by the basic judgment expressed by the verse lead us to a single geographical region:
First, when we adapt the value of the verse, 25:53, to the latitude-longitude coordinates, the intersection point of 25th North latitude and 53rd East longitude hits the Arabian Peninsula side of the Persian Gulf. Since two numbers naturally express positive numbers, when we adapt the coordinate plane to the map, it appears as 25th north latitude and 53rd east longitude. When the meaning of the verse is examined, we encounter the information that the fresh water comes out of the sea bottom and reaches the water surface without mixing with salt water. In the Persian Gulf, regions where fresh water and salt water come up to the surface without mixing with it are abundant. More importantly, such regions were gathered on the coasts of the Arabian Peninsula, where the coordinates of 25:53 hit. So why do we take 25, which is the sura number of the verse, and therefore the 25th latitude, rather than any latitude passing through the Persian Gulf? Because only this latitude is closer to the shores of the Arabian Peninsula, where there is no mixing of fresh water with salt at every point where it passes through the Persian Gulf. The 53rd longitude is on the Arabian side and coincides with the middle of the shallow region where the 25th latitude passes. In this region, the depth of the sea is low, that is, shallow, allowing the fresh water from the sea floor to come to the surface as much as possible without mixing with salt water.
The second very important feature is related to the words BAHRAIN and FURAT in the verse. BAHRAIN is the only island state that remains entirely within the Persian (Iranian) Gulf.
The word "furat" in the verse means both fresh water and the Euphrates River as a proper name. The waters of the Euphrates River are the longest rivers flowing into the Persian Gulf.
The word BERZAH, on the other hand, is a word of Arabic origin and means water on both sides, narrow land, isthmus that connects a peninsula to land in geography.
The word isthmus, on the other hand, includes the meanings of connecting a peninsula to land, water on both sides, narrow land, isthmus, "TONGUE ".
When the Persian Gulf maps are examined, it can be immediately noticed that the most striking and characteristic shape is the tongue-shaped Qatar Peninsula, which is connected to the mainland by a narrow isthmus. When the content of the word "barzakh" in the verse is considered as a geographical term, there must be a peninsula and a narrow passage that connects this peninsula to the land, surrounded by water on both sides, that is, an isthmus.
Here, the Qatar (Qatar) Peninsula creates a very distinctive shape for the Persian Gulf, according to the characteristics of the definition of BERZAH. It shows itself as a third distinctive feature together with BAHRAIN and FURAT (FIRAT) in the Persian Gulf, which is the sea where regions where fresh and salt water do not mix in significant amounts.by koca yusuf

Someone from Germany sent his interpretation of the following verses of the Holy Quran to Hazrat Amirul Momineen, Khalifatul Masih Vaa

وَ ھُوَ الَّذِيۡ مَرَجَ الۡبَحۡرَيۡنِ ھٰذَا عَذۡبٌ فُرَاتٌ وَّ ھٰذَا مِلۡحٌ اُجَاجٌ وَ جَعَلَ بَيۡنَھُمَا بَرۡزَخًا وَّ حِجۡرًا مَّحۡجُوۡرًا وَ ھُوَ الَّذِيۡ خَلَقَ مِنَ الۡمَآءِ بَشَرًا فَجَعَلَہٗ نَسَبًا وَّ صِھْرًا ؕ وَ کَانَ رَبُّکَ قَدِيۡرًا

[And He it is Who has caused the two seas to flow, this palatable (and) sweet, and that saltish (and) bitter; and between them He has placed a palatable and a great partition. And He it is Who has created man from water, and has made for him kindred by descent and kindred by marriage; and thy Lord is All-Powerful. (Surah al-Furqan, Ch. 25: V.54-55)]

The person interpreted the “sweet” and “saltish” waters mentioned in the verses to mean intracellular and extracellular fluids and said that the “creation of man from water,” mentioned in the second verse, could be a reference, that every human consists of cells with extracellular “salty” water and intracellular “sweet” water. Moreover, he wrote that cells consisted of “sweet” and “saltish” fluids too and that there was also a “barrier” between them. 

The person requested Huzoor’saa guidance in this regard. Huzoor-e-Anwaraa, in his letter dated 19 October 2021, provided the following guidance to him:

“That is fine as your personal interpretation and one aspect of these verses may well be what you have described. However, to confine the interpretation of these verses to only this aspect would be tantamount to limiting the broad scope of the Holy Quran’s message. This is because there are many other aspects of these Quranic verses that have been explained by the classical commentators in their respective times. Moreover, the Promised Messiahas and his successors have also explained many new aspects of these verses, which can be read in their tafasir and other writings.

“For example, seawater is very salty, but when that water condenses into clouds and falls back to the ground as precipitation, it is very sweet. And there is a ‘barrier’ between these two types of water that never allows [the seawater] to remain the same.

“Likewise, it can seemingly also be interpreted as the waters of seas and rivers. Seawater is salty, while water from rivers is usually sweet. 

“Then, it can also refer to the spiritual teaching, which is like sweet water and the teaching of disbelief, which is like salty water, i.e., the teachings that come directly from God are sweet and the teachings that, although they have existed in the world for a long time, are not based on direct revelation, are bitter.

“Similarly, many interpretations of ‘the creation of man and every living thing from water’ have been given by the Promised Messiahas and his Khulafa. Among them is that every living thing is sustained by water. Hence, when rain falls from the sky, crops grow on the earth, which sustains life. In the same way, it is necessary for spiritual life that spiritual water keeps descending from the heavens. Likewise, in the reservoirs of fresh and saltwater, i.e. the seas and rivers, Allah the Exalted has created food for humans and other animals in the form of different types of fish and aquatic creatures.

“Therefore, it is not correct to limit the wide scope of themes described in these Quranic verses to only one aspect. Yes, it is permissible to derive different meanings from them that are in accordance with the Holy Quran and the teachings of the Holy Prophetsa, as well as the interpretations of his ardent devotee, the Promised Messiahas, the Hakam and ‘Adl of the age.”
