- Allah revealed in Qur’an 13:2: “Allah is He Who raised the heavens without any pillars that ye can see; is firmly established on the throne (of authority); He has subjected the sun and the moon (to his Law)! Each one runs (its course) for a term appointed. He doth regulate all affairs, explaining the signs in detail, that ye may believe with certainty in the meeting with your Lord.”
The words “that ye can see” refers to both invisibility and presence. The heavens, like the earth do have pillars/support, and they are invisible. These “pillars” are the centrifugal and magnetic forces or “laws of gravitation” that keep them from falling. ( via no god but allah.org ) - 13:2- It is Allah Who raises the heavens without any support [pillar¹]. you see [the sky]². Moreover, he brought the Throne[administration]³ under his rule⁴. He put the Sun and the Moon into service, each flowing to a named expiration date. [God] plans the work and explains the verses [miracles]. You are expected to firmly believe in the meeting of your Lord (resurrection)
- ²: The verb (ترونها) meaning "you see them" is a separate sentence on its own. (zamahşeri:keşşaf, zad'ul mesir) because the pronoun (ها) (سماوات) [i.e. "heavens"] is female, so it turns to them.by h. öndeş
- Quran 13:2 states that the sky (heavens) or as we know it, the atmosphere, is supported by something you can’t see. And that is completely true, as the force that holds the atmoshere in place is gravity. Earth's gravity is strong enough to hold onto its atmosphere and keep it from drifting into space. Also it states that the sun and moon each have their orbit, which is completely correct according to modern physics. Contrary to popular belief the sun is not stationary! It moves in an orbit across the galaxy, to an appointed place that scientists have calculated. It will reach it in a few billion years (“an appointed time”).by matina mk
Seest thou not that Allah has made subject to you (men) all that is on the earth, and the ships that sail through the sea by His Command? He withholds the sky (“samaa”) from failing on the earth except by His leave: for Allah is Most Kind and Most Merciful to man (Quran 22:65)
- HOW DO SHIPS RUN BY GOD’S COMMAND? People during the time of revelation of Quran were more familiar with ships, more dependent on winds and waves. God is simply reminding that how human is given more authority on the Earth as they dwell here and roam around using technology, and God helps them by controlling the nature for them (wave and wind) through his command.
- HOW CAN SKY FALL ON THE EARTH WHEN IT IS NOT SOLID? The word “samaa" has various meanings including “rain”. The word is used 2 more verses to mean rain.
- And O my people! Ask forgiveness (of) your Lord, then turn in repentance to Him. He will send the sky/”samaa” (rain) upon you (in) abundance and increase you (in) strength (Quran 11:52)
- He will send down the sky/”samaa” (rain) upon you (in) abundance..and make for you gardens and make for you rivers (Quran 71:11–12)
* Rain was equally important for the sailor besides winds and waves as heavy rain could make their journey difficult. God withholds rain for their favour during sailing when God decrees so. In this verse God is simply explaining how he helped the human to be the Khalifa (ruling race) on earth by controlling the nature for them so that they can use technology that they have invented by the knowledge granted by God (note: God taught Adam every name).
First thing first brother.
About raising of the heavens, Allah did not say it with reference if the Earth. It is generally mentioned that how Allah has created the heavens i.e the entire universe. It does not say that Allah raised the heavens above the Earth.
Now before discussing the verse 65 of chapter 22, I would like to point out that the atmosphere protects Earth from harmful cosmic radiations. It also protects Earth from meteorites and small debris bombardment. As mentioned in Quran:
[Quran 21.32] And We made the sky a protective shield and they turn away from its sign {notice for now that it is not mentioned whether the atmosphere or space but only the world “assama’” meaning “sky” is used}
So we can conclude that in verse 65 of chapter 22, by the sky Allah doesn’t meant the falling of the universe onto the Earth, rather here the ‘sky’ means the meteorites and other floating bodies in the space. Allah has made such balanced laws of nature that everything remains in its orbits and rotate within limited pathways, and this happens by the will of Allah, who, if had wanted, could have made an asteroid field fall onto the Earth but he prevents that from happening.
Now you may be thinking that we interpret Quran in the way that suits our needs by describing ‘sky’ as heavenly objects rather than the entire universe itself but this is not the case. Allah does not in some cases define things clearly but mentions in such an obvious way that we have to perceive it ourselves that what does a word means. The God that tells you miraculous things like sending down the iron onto Earth(i.e Iron containing meteorites hit the Earth to its core and that's how we have iron today), He tells you that universe is constantly expanding and how every organism is made up of water, He hints towards the singularity of the position of stars and how blood is involved during the formation of milk in breast, He tells us that mountains may appear firm but they are slowly moving and a lot of other miraculous things that could not have been known by a person 1400 years ago, therefore it is not possible for the Most Intelligent Being to say something as stupid as the falling of the entire universe onto the Earth. Allah in one verse mentioned that 7 skies to exist, in other it says that sky is protecting the Earth without telling which sky, in another it is told how falling from the sky causes you to suffocate without mentioning whether He(swt) is talking about the atmosphere or the space or some other dimension(skies). You see, it is a book of signs, not science thus it does not give a detailed explanation of everything but only summarizes for our understanding. Like Quran tells of knocker in the heavens that is a piercing star (again not clarifying whether it is in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th or 7th heaven but only heaven). Surely these are the properties of a neutron star but Quran does not use the word neutron star or anything like that, it is upto us to understand that whether by knocker it means a star with arms that knocks on a door or a neutron star that sends waves that produce continuous knocking sound.
This is mentioned in Chapter 22 verse 65:
Do you not see that Allah has subjected to you whatever is on the earth and the ships which run through the sea by His command? And He restrains the sky (السماء) from falling (تقع) upon the earth (الارض), unless by His permission. Indeed Allah, to the people, is Kind and Merciful.
This ayah mentions one of the many blessings of Allah on the people i.e. he has created and protected the Earth so that human beings can live on it safely. Moreover, Quran is a book of guidance for all humanity and uses expression which are well known in Arabic language. The same is the case in this ayah. To expect that Quran will use scientific language when it mentions each and every physical phenomenon reveals one’s ignorance about power of linguistic expressions and how these are used to address the people.
Now coming to the ayah, the word used in the Quran which is translated as sky is Assama’a (السماء). The primary meaning of this word is “Elevation i.e. whatever is above whether a short distance above like clouds or a long distance above like stars and galaxies”. Quran has used this word in both the contexts in several other places. The opposite of this word is Al-Ardh (الارض) which means anything which is beneath e.g. Earth. The word which is translated as “fall” (تقع) has many meaning including “to meet”, “to arrive” (see meaning of its root word (وقع) in Hans Wehr Dictionary)
In this context if you read the verse again it will become clear to you that Allah is holding up whatever is above lest it meets with whatever is beneath whereby the universe will collapse on to itself.
It is mentioned in the Quran that Allah, the Supreme, created the universe by splitting apart the Heavens and the Earth “Do not the Unbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were joined together, before we clove them asunder? And We made from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?” (Ch.21 V.30). This verse along with the verse under question (22:65) clarify that it is Allah alone who created the universe by splitting it apart, and He alone is holding the whole universe, lest it collapses onto itself.
Another explanation of “restraining the sky from falling upon earth” is restraining part of the sky i.e. celestial bodies e.g. asteroids etc. from falling on earth and wiping out all humanity. These types of “extinction level” events are not uncommon in the history of Earth when large asteroids from the sky fell and killed most of the life on Earth.
Those whom Allah wills will benefit from this explanation and others will remain in the state of denial. So if you benefit from it please pray for me, and if you want to remain in denial then don’t bother me with your stupid comments, I don’t want to waste my time on you.
